WORDS OF WISDOM FOR STUDENTS, YOU WON'T REGRET IT
We looked forward to leaving home and if possible to go far away from home at least for now because we have actually spent most of our life in our town .
The issue of passing secondary school certificate examination (WEST AFRICAN SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION - WASCE) was a challenge for some of us who actually finished before the advent of (NATIONAL EXAMINATION COUNCIL - NECO).Sincerely speaking ,WASCE was a major huddle for some us as at then that must be crossed to actually get our joy and aspirations of entering into university fulfilled.
Thank God some of us crossed it with good grade that qualified us for university while some could not ,even some had to go for apprenticeship and learning of trades when they could not make it .Oh ,this generation of students don't know what people passed through in the hand of WASCE before now, if they do ,they will appreciate what NECO has done for them.When NECO came as other alternative for WASCE, that year for those who knew the history, you will attest to the fact that WASCE was put to shame with the result students got from NECO examination.Though I will totally not support the kind of grades that students had,it was obvious that many got result they never merited but over the years sanity has come to NECO and they have been able to stabilise and get it right -that's my opinion any way.
Joint admission matriculation board (JAMB) who was in charge of conducting entrance examination into university and other tertiary institutions also dealt with many students in our days ,many wrote JAMB so many times and JAMB jammed them.
Not to bore you with so much story,entering into university now has become easier ,we produce thousands of graduates every year and as am writing now,the cut off mark for entering into universities and other tertiary institutions has been ridiculously cut down given opportunity for more students to enter Nigeria tertiary institutions.
Though university life is a wonderful experience that every student yearns for but it's not without it's challenges and one of these challenges is insecurity ,we have had many cases of death among our students and this is very sad situation, come to think of what the trauma that the parents of these students will be going through. Some of those students were only son or child of their home and they lost their lives while in school.
In other to avoid this kind of incident from happening to you as student and our children who are in higher institutions of learning , we have put together this article so that we can safe the lives of our students and our children in our tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
THESE ARE 8 SAFETY WAYS FOR TERTIARY INSTITUTION STUDENTS
1) BE AN AMBASSADOR OF YOUR PARENTS
You must bear this in mind that though you are not at home but you have been sent to be an ambassador of your parents while in school,don't misrepresent your parent in any evil manner ,whatever you know your parent will never do or allow you to do ,don't do it while you are in school.Don't take liberty for a licence to do evil , because you are not within the perimeter of your home where your parent can see you and rebuke you doesn't call for bad behaviours.I could remember while I was in school ,my parent was at piece at home because they knew I will never do what will bring sorrow to them.This should be your attitude also and by doing that ,you won't endanger your life.
2) CHOOSE YOUR FRIENDS WISELY
Not every student that comes to you for friendship either opposite sex or same sex must be your friend.Screen . thoroughly everyone that is coming close to you for friendship and choose wisely those who you know will not cause problems for you and you will feel safe and secure moving with them. Know that bad communication corrupt good behaviours.A lot of friends has caused the death of their friends in campus, don't fall victim.
3) DON'T ATTRACT UNDUE ATTENTION TO YOURSELF
Bad guys on campus do seek for bad looking guys to have has friends or lure them join secret cults,don't think when you act weird that is when other students and even your lecturers will respect you and be afraid you.Don't pretend to be what you are not ,remember the son of who you are. Your actions and weird moves on campus can even be suggestive of what you are not and you can be mistaking for a criminal or cult guys on campus which can end up in prison or being killed innocently.
As a lady ,watch your dressings, don't wear provocative and seductive dresses ,it can attract bag guys towards you and you may fall victim of rape and abuse .This has happened many times in our campuses, let this not be your experience.
4) DON'T BE AT THE FORE FRONT
Protests are bound to happen in our campuses but yet most of the times it doesn't come and go without some implications or consequences on the students.One of the implications that we have had over the years is the death of students during the protest which probably being caused by the intervention of the law enforcement agencies such as policemen ,what a bad experience for the students and parents of the dead students.
Sometimes , If find out thoroughly , you will discover that most of the times the students that were killed and were not the main people that started the riot or protest, they are just student that did follow -follow ,the real culprits have escaped.
One of the ways to be safe during protest on campus is to find a route of escape as soon as possible if you can,know that with or without you the protest will go on.The students who wanted to stage the protest already have their plans and how to go about achieving it ,don't innocently waste your life.
In the case whereby there is no route of escape, ensure you are not at the for front of the protesting students, follow them slowly while you are still looking out for the route of escape, your life is so precious than to go and waste it.
5) LET YOUR PARENTS AND FRIENDS KNOW YOUR MOVEMENTS
Many students are very good at waking up in the morning and pick there bags ,off they are gone.Plan your journey with the knowledge of your parents and your friends in school, let them know your whereabouts.Sometimes it's when you are telling them your movement that they will inform you about the danger in going to where you are going.Don't just follow any body to any place without the knowledge of your other friends ,telling people about your movements safes you from endangering your life.
6) BE CAREFUL OF YOUR ACCOMMODATION
One of the major challenges many students face in campus is the problem of accommodation.Most of our institutions are off campus, simply put non - residential for students, or the accommodation is not enough for the population of the students, hence they will seek for accommodation outside the school campus which is popularly known as off campus.
If you find yourself in a situation where you will have to look for accommodation outside the school campus ,you must be very careful, find out about the environment where you are planning to stay ,is it prone to violence or any kind ,robbery or rape? Is it a well secured environment? After all that ,is it close to campus in case of any problem outside or inside the campus that you can quickly escape? Don't go for cheap but dangerous accommodation, look for what you can afford but yet highly secured.
7) ATTEND TO YOUR HEALTH CHALLENGES
In case you have any health challenges, don't be careless about it ,know what is expected of you to do to manage your health very well and adhere to your medications if you are on drugs.Ask your doctors what are the things you should not be doing that can worsening your health status and try as much as possible to adhere to it .Don't be carried away by the campus life and activities and neglect your health ,avoid stressing your body as much as you can.Health is wealth.
8) LET GOD BE YOUR UTMOST SECURITY
This I have found out that can never fail,other forms of security may fail ,but God kind of security is eternal.Even if by any means you find yourself in the shadow of death, I guarantee you maximum security with God .
