WAYS TO MAINTAIN A GOOD EYE SIGHT EVEN AT OLD AGE -DO ALL THESE NOW

One of the things that determines the quality of a good life is good eyesight ,any individual who has lost his eyes can never live a good quality life for the rest of his or her life. Eye is the light of the body .

According to the estimate made by American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) concerning the numbers of American that will develop age related eye problems, it was said that over 43 million Americans will do so by the year 2020.

In United state ,the leading cause of blindness is age related diseases such as diabetes, macular degeneration , cataract ,diabetic retinopathy glaucoma ,all these diseases are age related ,as you grow old ,large numbers of people (elderly ) tend to develop one or more of these diseases thereby making them prone to blindness if these diseases are not properly managed.

  

In this age ,it's becoming practically impossible for people over 60years of age not to use glasses. Medically ,as we grow old the lens of our eye tend to become harden thereby getting the muscles of our eye to become weaker and hence making it difficult for the eye to focus.

One thing you should know is that when the eye begins to find it difficult to focus ,the condition gradually continue to go worse and if nothing is done to it and it will get to a stage where you will have to use glasses to see clearly especially for reading.

My late mum and dad were not left out of this condition when they were alive ,the two of them can only read through the use of glasses, I also know that you have these people around you such as your dad, mum,aunt, uncle etc . Probably you too have started thinking of how soon you will join them because this has actually become norm.

This article is actually written for you to begin to have a change of mind about your eye as you grow old that it's actually possible not to use glasses even at old age.

THINGS TO DO REGULARLY TO SAFEGUARD YOUR EYE

1) STOP SMOKING IF YOU ARE

As we have earlier said that lose of sight most of the times is as a result of age related diseases, one among these age related diseases that can be caused by smoking is macular degeneration ,hence quit smoking if you do for the interest of your eyes in the nearest future when you grow old. Smoking also affect the eye oxidants that are beneficiary to the eye.

2) SUFFICIENT SLEEP

Always ensure you take adequate time to sleep ,sleep contribute generally to the well being of the body including the eye, there is a renewal process that goes on in the eye when you sleep. I have had this experience of not having adequate sleep,I will discover that my eyes are heavy ,just wanting to close and sleep.I won't be able to do much with eye until I sleep ,this is not good for the eye. The place of short naps has a great benefit also ,the eyes will get opportunity to also rest.
  
3) GIVE YOURSELF ADEQUATE EXERCISE

According to American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the studies conducted revealed that frequent exercise such as walking can reduce age related diseases such as macular degeneration by 70%. Exercise increases the blood circulation in your body and allows the flow of blood through the tiny blood vessels such as that of the eye.The exercise doesn't have to be vigorous ,just a brisk walk can be of great advantage .

4) DO REGULAR EYE EXERCISE

You may be surprised to hear eye exercise, yes there are eye exercises that can actually help your vision as you age. As other parts of your body have muscles so also the eye,by regular doing of eye exercise you will keep eye muscle in shape. You can do this anytime you are feeling tired in your eye,or early in the morning or before you go to bed.Do this consistently for a month and you will discover there will be a difference.

This is how you can exercise your eye :

Warming of your eye is part of exercising your eye ,you can do this by rubbing of your palm until they get warmth through the friction, place the warmth palm on your eye for about 5 seconds, do this repeatedly for 3 times. Another way of exercising your eye is by rolling your eyes repeatedly,

You can also make your eyes to look up ,then begin to circle the eyes in one direction for about ten times ,then change the circling of the eyes in opposite direction for ten times . These are ways to exercise the eye.

 
5) KEEP YOUR EYES FROM THESE THINGS AS MUCH AS YOU CAN

There are certain things around us that are not good for our eye, sometimes its excessive exposure of our eye to these things that results into bad eyesight ,Example of those things are:

* Excessive exposure to computer screen, don't be a computer addict, you are putting your eye in danger, as much as you can ,take away your eye from computer screen and relax your eyes as much as you can.

* Others include Fluorescent light, chlorinated water for swimming, dim light for reading is also dangerous for your eye, avoid excessive exposure to air conditioner. Be careful with all of these things and know when to avoid them.

6) LEARN WHAT TO EAT FOR YOUR EYE

It's very important to deliberately begin to eat for your eye now ,go for those foods that can help you to have good vision even at the old age. Example of this is carrot which contain large amount of vitamin A, get to find out other foods contain Vitamin C and E. Food rich in copper and zinc is also good for your eye.

To prevent macular degeneration which is common to old age ,eat foods rich in anti oxidant such as egg yolks, dark leafy greens, yellow peppers, carrots , sweet potatoes and pumpkins.

Examples of fish that you can eat that will help your sight include salmon, mackerel contain DHA and cod.

7) AVOID SUNLIGHT BY THE USE OF SUN GLASSES

The ultraviolet ray from the light that enters the eye causes damage to the eye over a period, this can cause cataract or macular degeneration as you grow old, hence to prevent this ,use sun glasses that can prevent direct sunlight entering into you eye.

8) USE YOUR PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT(PPE)

If the kind of work you do exposes your eye to potentially dangerous material ,hence use your safety eye-wear as part of your PPE always ,what you don't care about today may result into greater problem for your eye, take the necessary precautions now.

9) DO REGULAR EYE CHECK UP

It is very necessary to regularly visit your doctor (ophthalmologist) to know the state of your eye ,there are some eye conditions that go on silently without signs and symptoms such as glaucoma, you will only notice when the eye has gone bad ,during regular check up ,it can be detected by your doctor and timely intervention will safe your eye.

10) CHECK YOUR SUGAR LEVEL AND BLOOD PRESSURE

These 2 health conditions are some major cause of eye problem, do a regular check up for these,they are common among the elderly ,if noticed ,it can be controlled and managed which will prevent eye complications.
