The issue of rape doesn't know gender, age ,ethnicity, race, sexual orientation etc ,it can happen to anybody at anytime and anywhere ,don't be careless to think that with my social status ,health condition, or the place i am such as at park, inside car ,on the street or at work place, all of these cannot stop you from being raped. Sometimes the least expected person may become the rapist. We are in a society that normally blames women for this evil committed against them saying because of the provocative dress they wore, being drunk of alcohol, keeping wrong company etc.
Though all these reasons can actually contribute to the rape of a lady ,but sincerely the rapist in question went ahead purposefully to take an advantage of the lady without her consent.We are not advocating for provocative dressing or alcohol intake but all that we are saying is that rape is evil and nobody should hide behind the attitude or state of a lady to commit this detestable act against her.
Though we know that the community frowns at rape and it's a punishable offence in the court of law, yet all these don't stop this wicked act rather it is increasing by the day.
In the light of this increase despite the implications of rape, every woman should consider these safety tips to safeguard herself from rape.
SAFETY TIPS AGAINST RAPE
1) WHEN AT HOME
- You doors and windows must always being locked ,regularly check if they are faulty and tell your children not to open door for anybody without you knowing
- All strangers at your door must reveal their identity and why they have come before you let them in.If possible call the organisation they claim has sent them to you to confirm.
-When you move into new apartment, ensure you change the lock immediately and check thoroughly whether there is a hidden camera in the house
- Don't tell any stranger or whom you are not comfortable with that you are alone at home nor post on social media that you are home alone.
2) SAFETY TIPS AGAINST RAPE OUTSIDE YOUR HOME
WHILE YOU ARE WALKING:
- If you notice somebody is following you from the back ,stop and find a place to enter such as shopping mall, restaurants etc
- Are you under attack, scream and yell for help
- Avoid walking on bush path, deserted path and if you must do , always walk in the company of others
-Be very conscious and alert with your environment and walk with confidence.
OTHERS SAFETY TIPS INCLUDE :
1) AVOID DANGEROUS SITUATION
There are some situations you may suddenly or intentionally find yourself such as going for a party and drinks are served, don't take alcohol, if you take soft drinks ,ensure you are very vigilant, don't leave your drink to go and attend to another thing, you can be drugged,many ladies have fallen victims of rape due to that. Ensure you open and pour your drink by yourself
2) RESPOND QUICKLY TO YOUR INSTINCT
Anytime you begin to sense unsecured in a place or with anybody ,irrespective of whom the person may be, he could be your friend, class or course mate, even your brother in faith (Muslim or Christian) ,regardless of the relationship, listen to your instinct and obey quickly and leave the environment.
3) SET A BOUNDARY AND STICK TO IT
As a lady, you must set a boundary for yourself that must not be crossed by anybody and you stick to it and communicate politely , don't be too loose that anybody can touch you anywhere and anyhow.If anybody takes offense when you communicate to them your limit, don't compromise rather take your leave and then you settle it later, it's better than compromise and regret your action
4) BE FIRM IN YOUR REBUKE
When someone is sexually advancing towards you,don't take it lightly with them no matter who he is,don't agree with the person that you are misinterpreting his actions ,be firm and assertive in your rebuke. Not being firmed may be misinterpreted as consent.
5) BE FORCEFUL AND GO PHYSICAL
Sometimes the person may not yield to your verbal communication to stop his sexual advancement, he could be that the person may be under drug or alcohol influence. In such cases ,you just have to go physical with the person ,push and yell for help.
