Online banking has become popular in this 21st century that online banking safety tips should be considered as a very important aspect of online banking if you don't want to fall victim of online fraudsters who are looking for whom to defraud.

There are a lot of advantages of online banking that you cannot afford not to be using it just because of the fraudsters ,this benefits include;

5) You don't need to fill any teller ,check or withdrawal form before you can transact on your account.

6) You can pay your utility bills (electricity, water etc) just by a click

1) INSTALL SECURITY UPDATES REGULARLY

Most of the operating systems especially Microsoft Windows and Apple MacOS do have security updates that are being issued out by those companies, this is being done to protect your computer from recent Internet threats which can be dangerous to your online banking, hence you will be doing yourself a lot of good by regularly doing security updates on your computer. This can be done either by configuring your computer to check for security updates and install them automatically or you go to the websites of the company and check for updates.


2) USING OF FIREWALL

I want to believe that you know that anytime you are connected to Internet, you are already vulnerable to attacks ,hence one of the ways to protect yourself and your online banking is by using personal firewall.

This firewall can be a software , hardware or both sometimes which can be used to create a great barrier against attacks and protect your online information.

If you are using Microsoft Windows or Apple MacOS as your operating system, you don't need to bother yourself about firewall ,it's automatically activated on your computer. Any other operating system different from these two, you can go to their website to know how to install or activate your firewall.

3) USE WEBSITE WITH LOCK ICON

Before you enter your online banking details on any websites, it could even be your own bank, ensure you see the lock icon on the website address of the website you are about to enter your online banking details. The lock icon is usually at the left side of the website address bar.

4) USE WEBSITE WITH HTTPS

For your information, before you enter your online banking details, check whether the website you are about using starts with HTTPS or HTTP through your browser's address bar, HTTPS is more secure than HTTP.

5) STRONG PASSWORD

One of the most important aspect of online banking safety is using strong password,

-Any password you are had being using in any other websites should not be used for your online banking.

- Don't give your password to any person or institution for any reason

- Change your password regularly, this will make it difficult for people to guess your password.

- Don't change your password in any public computer or safe it there.

    GUIDELINES FOR THE USE OF PASSWORD 

- Ensure you use password with numbers and alphabets

- Don't include your name or your close relatives (children or spouse) name in your password

- Don't use your birthday date , phone number or that of your close relatives (children or spouse)

NOTE: Keep your passwords, Bank Verification Number (BVN ), Personal Identification Number (PIN) and card numbers confidential.

6) CLEAR BROWSER CACHE

In case, you have a reason to use public ,friends or relatives computer to do online banking, ensure that you log out properly, go to the browser cache and clear it because it keeps the record or copy of the website that is recently viewed and your details online banking details may be seen.

Whenever you log in to do online banking transaction, ensure you finish whatever you are doing online, don't leave the Web page on and go elsewhere, your details my have been copied before you come back to continue.

7) REGULAR CHECKING OF YOUR ACCOUNT

Make this a habit that you check your account regularly especially after you have just done online transaction to see if anything has gone wrong with your account, this can help you to know if you will have to contact your financial institution or change your password or online banking details

8) DON'T USE UNLICENSED ANTIVIRUS

This can expose your computer to attacks ,only use antivirus that is licensed and do regular updates in other to protect you from recent virus.

9) DON'T CLICK ON URL FROM EMAILS

Scammers do send out emails that contain fake URLs in other to defraud their victims, most of the times the URLs look so similar to your financial institution.Don't click on any URLs from any email sent to you ,whether you are sure or not the source of the email. Always type your bank URL on your browser to log in for your online transactions.
