Road safety is everyone's utmost desire anytime you are behind the wheel and even for the passenger, nobody wants to loss his or her life on the road due to road traffic accident. Recently I lost one of the vibrant member of my association to road accident,it was a great loss to the association and the most painful aspect of it was that the cause of the accident was due to human error which could have been averted.
This is the case of many road accident that has occurred on our roads in which it would not have happened if road safety precautions were observed to the letter.
NOTE : Whenever you are on the road ,for the safety of your life, the life of passenger you are carrying and other road users , ensure you obey all road traffic rules, they are for your safety.
THESE ARE THE SAFETY TIPS TO SAFE YOU ON THE ROAD
1) USE OF ANTILOCK BREAKING SYSTEM (ABS)
Some cars don't have this system in them which plays a vital role in preventing road accident. Imagine you are driving on the highway and suddenly a kid runs a cross the road ,the first thing that will come to your mind is matching the brake.
What do you think will happen if you match the break and the wheel becomes stiffed and you cannot swift the hand of car away from the kid, their would be accident.Anti-lock breaking system prevent the locking of the wheel. And to avoid this ,install ANTI-LOCK breaking system if your car does not have it to prevent such accident.In general ABS improves your control and plays important role while driving on a slippery road
2) WATCH YOUR BRAKING DISTANCE
Braking distance is the distance covers by a car after the brake has been applied.
What is the implication of this?
If you are on the road ,make it a practice to always look at the car behind you if it's braking distance is long enough not to hit you from the back if you suddenly match the break.For heavy cars like lorries ,their braking distance is longer than small cars , hence if any car stops suddenly in front of them with a short distance, there is tendency for the lorry to hit the car even after the driver has also quickly matched the break.
3) THE PRESSURE INSIDE YOUR TYRE MUST BE ADEQUATE
The pressure in your tyre plays a vital role in your safety on the road and also help your fuel usage.Do you know that you are expected to check the pressure in your tyre once in a week? Not even only the tyres on the car but also your spear tyre. This will prevent you from running into dilemma of what to do after your tyre is flat and you rush to bring the spear tyre alas! It is flat.
4) ENSURE YOU HAVE SAFE DISTANCE BETWEEN YOU AND THE CAR IN FRONT.
It is very important to maintain a safe distance between you and the car in front of you,you cannot tell when the car in front of you will stop suddenly and if you don't maintain a safe distance, you will hit the car from behind.
5) AVOID DISTRACTIONS AS MUCH YOU CAN
When you are behind the wheel, you cannot afford to have divided attention, it requires your full attention.I could remember when I just bought my second car which was a manual car unlike the first car that was automatic. I was actually learning how to drive manual,on that day I carried my friend and he was sitting beside me and we were talking, before I knew it , my attention was divided and as i looked to check the car in front of me I was very close and has I matched the brake and before my car could stop i hit the car. Many things can distract you such as your phone, very loud music, passengers etc.
6) DANGEROUS TO EXCEED THE SPEED LIMIT
When you are on the road and you see road signs about the speed limit for example 50km/h ,don't exceed the limit even if you see other car drivers running faster than the speed limit,don't join them but maintain the speed limit,the sign you see on the road is for a reason,it could be because of animal crossing ,or sharp bend etc. Obey this speed limit and safe your life from road accident .
NOTE:
- The faster the car on the road, the longer it will take for the car to come under your control when you apply break which can cause accident
- When you are on top speed and you have to suddenly match the break in case of animal crossing the car has tendency of somersaulting and you can lose control of the car.
If you have any reason to overtake probably the other car is moving very slow ,ensure you make your intention known by applying your car horn , trafficate and overtake from the right side on the road.
7) PAY ALL THE ATTENTION ON THE ROAD
Many accidents that had occurred, most of the time you hear the driver saying "I didn't see it" . Most of the times ,this excuse is not tenable because what you complain to have been the cause of the accident actually was not invisible, it was lack of your attention on the road that caused the accident.Don't believe that other road user should obey the traffic rules, give allowance for their disobedience and error ,don't claim right on the road, it's your safety on the road that should be your major concern.
8) BE AN ARDENT USER OF SEAT BELT
It must be your driving habit to constantly use seat belt, this is the most important safety device in your car, dough to you it may look insignificant but it can safe your life.In case of a collision, it prevents you from hitting your head, ribcage, chest against the steering wheel or dashboard and even from jumping through the screen out of the car.if you put your baby inside the car, ensure you put the baby in baby car seat and fasten it using seat belt.
